The beauty and sentience of animals is often overlooked; especially those bred for consumption. When we see them visually celebrated and honored, we begin to open up to the idea that there is more personality and life to them than what we were originally led to believe. I had to reassess what I knew about turkeys when I met Portia at The Gentle Barn in California. She was genetically modified so that she grew really big really fast, but her weight rendered her little legs useless as she got older. She greeted her visitors from her beautifully bejeweled throne and everyone adored her for the sweet sentient being that she was. She was honored and celebrated every single Sunday when she was alive. That image forever changed my life and I hope to do the same for more animals and humans. She has since passed and I love being able to honor her memory.
